Growth and Photosynthetic Responses of Seedlings of Japanese White Birch, a Fast-Growing Pioneer Species, to Free-Air Elevated O3 and CO2

چکیده

Plant growth is not solely determined by the net photosynthetic rate (A), but also influenced amount of leaves as a apparatus. To evaluate responses to CO2 and O3, we investigated effects elevated (550–560 µmol mol?1) O3 (52 nmol mol?1; 1.7 × ambient O3) on photosynthesis biomass allocation in seedlings Japanese white birch (Betula platyphylla var. japonica) grown free-air exposure system without any limitation root growth. Total was enhanced decreased O3. The ratio shoot (R:S ratio) showed no difference among treatment combinations, suggesting that neither nor affected leaf. Accordingly, might be more important for response birch. Based A measured under respective conditions, light-saturated at light intensity 1500 m?2 s?1 (A1500) young (ca. 30 days old) exhibited enhancement August, acclimation CO2. However, lower A1500 observed old 60 plants (regulated twice O3). Conversely, light-limited 200 (A200) significantly leaves, suppressed leaves. Decreases total attributed accelerated leaf senescence indicated reduced A200 Increases high intensities, which possibly occurred before and/or limiting intensities.

Relationship between photosynthesis and leaf nitrogen concentration in ambient and elevated [CO2] in white birch seedlings.

To study the effects of elevated CO2 concentration ([CO2]) on relationships between nitrogen (N) nutrition and foliar gas exchange parameters, white birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.) seedlings were exposed to one of five N-supply regimes (10, 80, 150, 220, 290 mg N l(-1)) in either ambient [CO2] (360 micromol mol(-1)) or elevated [CO2] (720 micromol mol(-1)) in environment-controlled greenhouses...

Stomatal uptake of O3 in aspen and aspen-birch forests under free-air CO2 and O3 enrichment.

Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) may alleviate the toxicological impacts of concurrently rising tropospheric ozone (O3) during the present century if higher CO2 is accompanied by lower stomatal conductance (gs), as assumed by many models. We investigated how elevated concentrations of CO2 and O3, alone and in combination, affected the accumulated stomatal flux of O3 (AFst) by canopies an...

Comparison of the photosynthetic capacity of Siberian and Japa

the photosynthetic capacity of Siberian white birch and Japanese white birch (Betula platyphylla Sukatch. and B. platyphylla Sukatch. var. japonica Hara) were measured. Birch seedlings were raised with a CO2 partial pressure of 36 ± 0.3 Pa (i.e., ambient) or 70 ± 0.6 Pa at day/night temperatures of either 30/16 °C or 26/12 °C. Siberian birch leaves were smaller and thicker than Japanese birch l...
